About the Author
"Dipak Patranabis is presently Professor Emeritus, Department of Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, Heritage Institute of Technology, Kolkata. Prior to that, he was Professor, Head, and then Emeritus Fellow at Jadavpur University, Kolkata, in the Department of Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering, After he completed M.Sc (Tech.) from Calcutta University, Prof. Patranabis had a brief stint in teaching Physics. Then he joined Damodar Valley Corporation as an Electrical Engineer. Subsequently he was in Guest Keen Williams Limited, Howrah, as an Instrument Engineer for over four years only to return to teaching and research at Jadavpur University, taking charge of the newly formed and research at Jadavpur University, taking charge of the newly formed department of Instrumentation and Electronics Engineering. He obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Calcutta at the early period of his teaching and research career. Dr. Patranabis has authored over 150 research papers and six books in Instrumentation and Electronics. He has guided many Ph.D. scholars and is still active in research and teaching. He was the President of IIST for two years, edited Journal of IIST for six years, and was honorary editor of the Journal of IETE for two years for the Circuits and Systems group. He was also the summary editor for Springer-Verlag for over 7 years and is a reviewer of research papers of many international and national-level research journals. He has also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Automations (ISA) USA."

Awesome Book!

This book was great, and really helpful! I am more of an English and History course kind of girl, and science is usually something I really have to make myself focus on. However this book kept me interested and explained the material in a clear concise way. I never felt that I had to slog through massive amounts of information in order to get to "main idea". I used this book for an online class last semester and it was instrumental in helping me teach myself the material. Definitely one of my favorite science textbooks so far.

A word of advice, it really helps to buy the access to the online website. I would study for my tests by reading the chapter and watching the videos. I got an A in the class thanks to this book!

Easy to Understand

This book is very easy to understand. It maintains interest with contemporary graphics. There are many caption boxes in the margin. At the end of each chapter there is a chapter summary, a list of important terms and many, many exercises to help you learn the material. The downfall with the exercises is that they do not have the answers. There are also many additional study tools available on the books companion website. I needed this book for a college class. I'd also recommend the seller I purchased from. Very, very nice!

Well Presented

As a post-secondary instructor, I find this text presents a subject many students find difficult in a non-intimidating fashion. The prologue does a fine job setting up the tone of the rest of the book without scaring or boring the student. A sufficient amount of text is dedicated to the concepts of physical science rather than bombarding the learner with equation after equation (although the equations are there, as they're necessary to back up the concepts). Some textbooks help to make teaching easier. This would be one of those books.

Great reference, but companion website is elusive

I like this book a lot--it's come in handy during fourth year clinical year rotations in veterinary school. I know I will use it a lot when I get to my first job. This series was highly recommended to me by a practicing vet who says he uses them a lot. I also really like the Clinical Veterinary Adviser, 3rd edition. I use both of them. The Clinical Vet Adviser has a really great, easy to use companion website that I use a lot. However, this Five-Minute Consult, although it claims to have a companion website, the website included in the book doesn't seem to exist. It anyone can help me figure out what's going on, I'd appreciate it.

Great for anyone in the vet med field

I absolutely love this book!! I am a registered veterinary technician who is going to vet school and while I already knew a lot about diseases, illnesses, etc. This book goes into great detail!! Gives treatment options, prognosis, pharmacy advice for prescriptions, what breeds it typically happens in, and so much more. Well worth the money and would make a perfect gift for anyone in the veterinary medicine field!

About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology , obtained his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal and worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before taking a faculty position at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers. However, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. “It ties together everything I love about my job; students, teaching, writing, and research.”

Pinel attributes much of his success to his wife Maggie who is an artist and professional designer. Over the years, they have collaborated on many projects, and the quality of Biopsychology’s illustrations is largely attributable to her skill and effort.

It's a wild ride!

The first two words that come to mind are "fascinating" and "challenging," in that order. You'll feel like a cognitive neuroscientist by the time you're done. I don't think my amygdala and prefrontal cortex will ever be the same, not to mention my hippocampus. Sometimes I think I'm having a "spliit-brain" (chapter 16) experience, and my corpus callosum (the largest cerebral commissure) hasn't even been severed! Get ready to be "wowed" by a part of the brain thought to 'generate the neural representation of thought' (p. 430), and brush up on your biochemistry. I virtually knew little or nothing about these and other subjects of the book, but was drawn in by the stunning study of the brain. Bottom line, the whole experience of reading and studying this book is worth every neuron spent on doing so. It's a wild ride!

I used this textbook for my Brain and Behavior / Neurobiology class instead of the 8th edition without any issues. The material was practically the same as the new edition- just a couple of test questions that I could not answer in MyPsych Lab. Recommend purchasing this edition for students looking to save a buck!

The writing style is engaging and I particularly enjoyed the author's personal anecdotes. The chapters are written in a straight forward format with clear and concise explanations- except for the chapter on visual systems. The visual systems chapter was overwhelming, wordy, and difficult to understand.

Queen of the wolves

I received this book for an honest review.

The story line of Hidden Queen was fantastic. A young werewolf princess witnesses her parents being murdered and has to go into hiding, but hiding wont keep her safe. I loved this new take on wolves and vampires.

However, it needed editing. There were wrong and misspelled words, and tenses got mixed up which made it a hard book to read.

If this book was edited I'd give it a higher rating based on a great story. I'm also very interested in seeing where the rest of the story goes.

I don't usually do this, but I hope that this helps.

I loved the love story. It was a great, and refreshing. I can't say much more without giving away the story line. But for someone who has read TONS of these, it was a nice change of pace. I liked the plot, and the timeline.

While there wasn't explicit sex, there was sex. To me, I'd say it was R rated (but if you don't like sex scenes in books then I'd say read at your own risk). I do like that they don't have to be naked to shift. So you don't have a bunch of horny werewolves running around naked all of the time.

The story was pretty good, editing was HORRIBLE and at some points distracted from the story because it'd take me a minute just to figure out what she was trying to say.

By the end she was getting pretty silly. She's different from everyone. She feels like she's this average person, and all the boys she's attracted to are "Greek Gods". And they all worship her beauty. But not only that she's so strong that she can beat EVERYONE at hand to hand combat in training. She gets these special powers because she's the queen, but it doesn't stop there, she gets even more special powers, and then later her relationship is so rare that it's like a fairy tale to everyone, and makes her even more special and powerful. It's like her character flaws are that she "loves too much" or "cares too deeply".

The thing that bummed me the most is that it turned out to be the first installment in another trilogy. I didn't see any real indication when I found this book, and I was waiting for the resolution as I was reading. When I realized that I wasn't going to get the ending I lost all interest. Because while I liked the book I'm not interested in waiting 2 years, and spending at least $8 more to get to the end.

Great premise... horrible writing

I gave this 2 stars because I though the story itself was good. However, the writing and "editing" was absolutely atrocious. I forced myself to read this because I like the story. It does end with a cliffhanger, more or less. There's more story to tell and I'm sure it's interesting. But, I truly hope that the author takes more care and/or has someone- ANYONE- proofread the next book. I would be embarrassed to have someone read this as is if I wrote it.

Mind Blowing and Concept Ending

I was not expecting this book to be as good as it is. Due to the recent glut of what have come to be known as "neo-advaita" books, along with the fact that it is a fairly short book, I wasn't expecting much. After all, I've read so many books in this genre, that I almost read them now with the attitude of "Well, let's see if you can tell me something that I've not heard 100 times before!". I have to admit that I've become pretty jaded.

But this book proved me wrong and in the process certainly did tell me many things I had not considered before! Not so much from the perspective of introducing new concepts, but through the author's amazing ability to use visual and scientific examples to make his point. He does use "concepts" in this book, but uses them very deftly, using various "ideas" to remove and destroy others. Which may leave you (your mind) in a "groundless" and possibly "uncomfortable" position mentally. But he doesn't just abandon you in this state. He shows (or more correctly, allows you to discover for yourself) the joy and peace and passion of living each moment with simply "What Is".

I have heard of the idea of "nondoership" many times, but it seems to be something that is only KNOWN to be Truth by those who have realized What They Truly Are, and is asked to be taken on faith by the rest of us. Mr. Crowley almost "reverses" that process and "starts at the end".... demonstrating (indisputably) the Truth of "nondoership" and then "works backward" to show just how profound a realization this truly is. When "SEEN" to be the truth of our existence, so many other concepts and beliefs simply crumble and fall away on their own, leaving us in a space of pure non-judgemental Awareness, peace and Self-recognition.

If "enlightenment" occurs as a result of reading this book, that is great. It is certainly nothing that "you" or "I' can control! But even if it doesn't, the ideas in this book have a way of "sticking with you" and returning you to that place of "questioning" which leads to the "Don't Know Mind". It's like a good song that sticks in your head, only in this case, the "song" slowly and gently deconstructs all you thought you knew and were so sure about!

Even if you (or someone you know) have NO interest in this genre of book, it will powerfully affect the way you think about the world and yourself. It is so simply (yet powerfully) written that I feel it would do this for almost anyone. I hate to even use the term "neo-advaita" in this review, because this book goes FAR beyond that label.

Great book, novel approach (no pun intended) and a very possibly life changing experience!!!!!

The spiritual quest has been part of the human experience for centuries, yet in recent times the literature has been hijacked by a feel-good self-help industry. Crowley brings us back on track with "From Here to Here," a book that will have you looking at yourself in ways you may never have considered. What previously seemed obvious gets turned on it's head, and you are led down a path more in league with the sages of the past than the cloyingly sweet offerings of the latest PBS special. Be sure you're serious, though, as once that door is opened it's difficult to close.

This book provides the reader with a thought provoking, seemingly complex, yet simple concept. Enlightenment is what we already are, there is only its recognition. Once the reader grasps this, life becomes much easier. The author takes us on a journey invalidating the illusionary ego and unlocking our natural human compassion. I encourage you to take the time to read this short book. It's presentation is unique and powerful.

About the Author

M. David Miller has been working in the field of assessment and evaluation for more than 25 years. He is a Professor in Research Methods and Evaluation at the University of Florida. He is also the Director of the Collaborative Assessment and Program Evaluation Services, which conducts evaluation and assessments of public school programs and NSF grants at the UF. As part of this work, he is also the Director of the University of Florida’s Quality Enhancement Plan, which is looking at ways to prepare undergraduates to compete in an international environment. He has also been a co-Director of a state K-12 assessment program and was the data analyst for the Second International Mathematics Study.

Robert L. Linn is a Distinguished Professor emeritus of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and Lifetime National associate of the National Academies. He is a former President of the Division of Evaluation and Measurement of the American Psychological Association, former President of the National Council on Measurement in Education, former Vice President of the American Educational Research Association for the Division of Measurement and Research methodology, and former President of the American Educational Research Association. He is widely published in educational measurement and has received several awards, including the ETS Award for Distinguished Service to Measurement, the E. L. Thorndike Award, the E. F. Lindquist Award, the National Council on Measurement in Education Career Award, and the American Educational Research Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Educational Research.

Don't get e-reader version for school

This book was a huge dissapointment. I hate hate hate when I buy through kindle, and then can't view it on my computer or my phone. GRRRRR

Required text or I wouldn't have bothered

Ugh, what tortured language, using as many words as possible to convey a straightforward concept. I am *not* a fan of this textbook! I've used much better textbooks that have similar information in some of my other grad program classes. Not a keeper on my reference shelf.

Why on earth doesn't the book work on my other devices??!!

The book is considered a classic. The 11th edition, content wise, is great. However, I am so upset that I can open this book ONLY through the Kindle app on my iPad. What is the publisher thinking? I told my professor and he is not considering the text for next semester. This will be a shame because the content is great.
