Plundered for centuries for its natural resources (which remain Africa's most abundant), the Congo was not always a place of horror. Before the Portuguese landed on its shores at the end of the 15th century, it was a prosperous and thriving region. The Congo River, the world's second longest as well as the deepest, and one of the only routes to the continent's interior, provided indigenous populations with ample means for living and trading. What the Portuguese found first to exploit were people, and with the slave trade began a dizzying downward spiral of conquest and degradation that continued for centuries. By the 19th century the race to explore the full length of the legendary river masked a fight for territorial and moral control among the French, Arabs, British, Germans, as well as American missionaries, all of whom dreamed of possessing Africa's very heart. When King Leopold of Belgium managed to solidify control in 1885, the Congo "question" seemed solved. His reign, of course, was almost pathological in its cruelty-the true source of Conrad's "horror"-and its grim legacy endures to this day.

Edgerton documents the Congo's long, sad history with a sense of empathy with and admiration for the character of the land and its inhabitants. Since independence in June 1960, the country has endured the machinations and disappointments of one dictator after another, beginning with Patrice Lumumba, and continuing through Joseph Mobutu, Laurent Kabila, and today Kabila's son, Joseph, who assumed power after his father was assassinated in January 2001. Whether called the "Congo Free State," or "Zaire," or the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the country remains perilously unstable.

During the past few years, the Congo, long exploited for its natural resources and among the most corrupt countries in Africa, has been explored by a number of authors. Most of these books have been journalistic accounts, but Edgerton offers a historical narrative of a country ravaged by colonial exploitation and the corrupt rule of a native despot. His story is familiar, but it is told accurately and well, from the arrival of Portuguese explorers in the 16th century through the recent, brief rule of Laurent Kabila. The author doesn't neglect the detrimental role played by the West: the rule of Belgium's King Leopold symbolized the worst of colonial exploitation. But Edgerton (The Fall of the Asante Empire), a professor of psychiatry at UCLA, refrains from turning this into an anti-West morality tale. He shows how Arab invaders spread cannibalism and notes that Africans have not redeemed themselves when in charge of the country. As a result, there's little reason to doubt Edgerton's conclusion: "Even if an agreement about elections and army integration were, by some miracle, to take place, there is no reason to believe that peace would be restored" to this embattled country. Without a doubt one of the most troubled regions in Africa, the Congo has a complex, often disturbing history. Populated by several different cultures, including the Mbuti Pygmies and the Bakongo, the Congo was unknown to Europeans until Diogo Cao, a Portuguese captain, ventured into its depths in 1482. Cao and his men were treated well, and in time more Europeans followed, many of them famous explorers, such as David Livingstone and Henry Stanley. Missionaries followed as well, determined to convert the peoples of the Congo to Christianity. King Leopold's "ownership" of the Congo--private property until Belgium "bought" it from him in 1908--devastated the denizens by forcing them to work under conditions so horrific that the population plummeted from 20 million to 6 million in less than 30 years. The year 1960 brought Congolese independence and ultimately brought to power Joseph-Desire Mobutu, who proved to be every bit as corrupt as his European predecessors. A Good Primer on The Congo

This book describes Africa's Heart of Darkness-The Congo. It is a region of heavy jungle in central Africa that is best known, to put it mildly, for barbarism.

In many ways the book is more about the European explorers and pioneers that lived in the region rather than the indigenous people of the Congo. Sub-Sahara Africa has little history and fewer cultural artifacts.

This is an easy read for those interested in Africa and its dark heart.

This book opened my eyes to many pieces of history of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Robert Edgerton does a masterful job presenting key elements that brought this region of Africa to the place it is in today.

A summary history of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Another fine book from Edgerton. For an anthropologist, Edgerton does a good job writing history. There have been several fine books about the Congo Free State and even Mobutu's Zaire, but none have wrapped up the history of this huge country as Edgerton has in this recent book. Basically, the author starts out with the description of the country, followed by a chapters on discovering the Congo, the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, the independence and civil war period, and Mobutu's Zaire.
The history goes through 2001.
I would have loved to see some views on what will happen to the Congo. Edgerton states that this country is rich in natural resources, but I wonder if it can really remain one single country due to the many tribes who live in the DRC. Ethnic hatreds flamed by neighboring aggressive countries will test the strength of this country remaining as one. If not, perhaps the DRC and it's people will continue to hang on after more bad governments. For those interested in Africa, this is a worthwhile book.

best practice notebook available for piano students

This is an excellent practice assignment book for piano students. My entire studio uses this, and it helps me have a record of what each student has played over time, as well as a way to show parents what we've studied in lessons that day. There's a postcard section at the top where my younger students write me postcards --- very cute to read those!

The Faber series, Piano Adventures has been a favorite of mine for students to use. The material is extremely beneficial for beginning to intermediate students, grounding them in the basics of theory, technique, artistry, and articulation,avoiding extensive fingering notation, while using the entire keyboard, rather than just two positions. It's all there

I love it that they wrote out the days of the week for the section where the students write in their practicing time. I just circle the first day that they should start writing things in and away they go! They also did a nice job giving you space to write thoughts and encouragement. Book type is also written so a teacher doesn't have to be writing that every week. Saves on time at the lesson.

Love this book!!!

I bought this for my boyfriend as a birthday gift. We love going out and trying new drinks together and exploring our knowledge of cocktails and such. I bought a "bartender beginner" kit including all the basics to make your own cocktail drinks. I included some books, this being one of them, so he could reference them. The retro themed pictures and descriptions first intrigued me but when it arrived, I couldn't have been more happier! I loved it! The pictures were great! Each page has a recipe and a tip or trick for the lifestyle of going out. There are different themes throughout the book, chapters if you will, of the lifestyle, culture, even movie-inspired drinks from back in the day! It was a great book, not only to have in his library but also just to read! I'm even considering buying it when the holiday season rolls around for some other guy friends. 10/10 would recommend.

This book is attractive and does well to mimic the Mad Men style artistry. That is about all that could be said. The organization of the book is terrible. I've found many of the cocktail recipes to be off. Really disappointed in this.

One of the most helpful books I have ever read

After listening to the warm and enlightening tape by Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes, "Warming the Stone Child" I realized that I needed to learn to mother myself. Dr. Estes said that even if one is 'unmothered' or not mothered well they can indeed learn to mother themselves and this would nurture and grow the internal mother within which would give them strength and inner security and help mend the gnawing hunger within for love which is often filled by addictive behaviors. So my next question was how do I learn to mother myself when I didn't have a good role model? This book is helping me to learn more about mothering and nurturing myself. Reading this book felt good deep inside and I could feel so many parts of myself being nourished by the authors words and grow stronger. I highly recommend this book to anyone who didn't have adequate mothering. It is also helping me learn to be a better mother to my own son.
I also recommend the tapes and books by Dr. Estes and the books of Victoria Secunda and Motherless Daughters.

A great self help!

This book was highly recommended by a mentor of mine, and it's one of those books you can get for a cent plus shipping. I was skeptical, I thought it was going to be a little too goofy, but it's a really helpful, insightful book. If you have issues dealing with your mother this book can help you work them out for yourself. It's a lot to take in all at once, I read about ten minutes out of it every couple days, it's a very good read!

Engaging and intriging are the first words that spring to mind when considering this book. The story moves at a good pace and the reader is eager to reach the next chapter. The characters are strong and by the end of the book you feel as though you really know them. If time had allowed, once I got hooked by the story I could have read it in one sitting because you just had to know what the outcome was to be. I will certainly purchase book two and look forward to where the story will lead me. Read this book, you will not be disappointed.

A Good Paranormal Romance Book

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Ms King sure used many big words throughout the book which was refreshing as this is not the norm for other paranormal romance books that I've read to date (and I read quite alot of them). Her vivid imagination was captured in her book quite well. And because the book was set in Australia, I just loved it! As an Aussie, I am familiar with the geography of this book (for once) and now I really want to visit Cape Schanck (I only went out to Mornington Peninsula, not Cape Schanck).

Anyway, getting back to the book, I really liked Bree and Sebastian. There were twists and turns throughout the book and I liked how her 'power' developed throughout the book. And Sebastian is so sweet. The book flowed smoothly and everything made sense. The book was also fast-paced which was great.

I just started the 2nd book and I'm quite addicted to the series already. Well done Ms King.

There was a lot of criticism about the big words that were used which I found kind of embarrassing. Its embarrassing to think that literate people would be frightened of big words. I found the alternate universe theories interesting. There were themes of Buddhism and new age which are, I believe the inspiration of the other world. Anyway, it reminds me of the themes the author used. I only reserve five stars for the greatest books I have ever read. It was an interesting story. Another description or phrase that comes to mind "Ye Shall be as gods."

Amazing book!

What I liked most about this book was the wealth of information and the way that it was organized in a way that was easy to understand. The representations are of extremely high quality, like the pictures, which make it easy to note every feature of the bone. I find it is simple and logical. This is a perfect tool to cater students who are in field of medicine. It adds more knowledge to the instructor and students to customize the information suited for their individual needs. I find it amazing!

This book helped me understand how muscles attach to bones.Beyond the muscle, the epimysium becomes a tendon. Muscles attach to the bone either directly or indirectly. Attachment is considered to be ‘direct’ when the muscle’s epimysium fuses with the periosteum (the connective tissue that envelops bones). Attachment is considered ‘indirect’ when the epimysium extends beyond the muscle to form a tendon, which attaches to the bone.
