This book reveals what health care policies crafted in Washington, D. C. or state capitals look like when they hit the street. It shows how Medicaid and Medicare work and don't work, the Catch-22s of hospital financing in the inner city, the racial politics of organ transplants, the failure of childhood immunization programs, the vexed issues of individual responsibility and institutional paternalism. One observer puts it this way: "Show me the poor woman who finds a way to get everything she's entitled to in the system, and I'll show you a woman who could run General Motors."

Abraham deftly weaves these themes together to make a persuasive case for health care reform while unflinchingly presenting the complexities that will make true reform as difficult as it is necessary. This is a refreshing chronicle of the inadequate patchwork of federally funded health programs caring for our nation's urban poor. Journalist Abraham uses the medically plagued Banes family as a springboard for his analyses of the convoluted, mysterious, and at times nonsensical healthcare system that holds the urban poor captive. Unlike Alex Kotlowitz, whose There Are No Children Here ( LJ 4/1/91) elucidates the glaring inequities in our social system through the powerful story of two boys, Abraham uses the Banes's ill health as a pulpit for reciting numerous studies, quoting scholars, and commenting on current policy debates. Abraham does an excellent job of explaining the maze of healthcare programs available to the urban poor. More importantly, he clearly identifies in human and policy terms how these same programs have failed a population desperately in need of help. Recommended for most collections.

Cool yet compassionate eyewitness report of an inner-city black family's struggle to cope with sickness and poverty. Abraham, expanding on articles she wrote for The Chicago Reporter, demonstrates brilliantly just how confusing and cumbersome our national health-care system has become. From May 1989 to April 1990, Abraham followed the (pseudonymous) Banes family as its head, Jackie, cared for her bedridden diabetic grandmother; her alcoholic, partially paralyzed father; her drug-abusing husband, on thrice-weekly dialysis following kidney failure; and three young children. The labyrinthine mysteries of Medicare and Medicaid are daunting even to the Yale-educated author, yet Jackie must make what sense of them she can in order to keep her family going. Still, services that might have protected the children's health or lightened the family's burdens often aren't taken advantage of thanks to confusion about how the system works, lack of information, and the overwhelming job of simply surviving from one day to the next. Abraham concentrates on two stories--that of Jackie's grandmother, whose condition worsens, requiring hospitalization, then nursing-home care; and that of Jackie's husband, who receives a second kidney transplant. Both stories raise the issue of rationing: Could the $120,000 spent on the final months of the grandmother's life have been better utilized? How should recipients be selected for scarce organs? Abraham's depiction of the Baneses' plight reveals serious flaws in our health-care system, but the more basic problem is seen to be the devastating social illness of our inner cities, an illness no national health plan can cure. DON'T BE PUT OFF BY THE TITLE

As a graduate student writing my thesis on urban health care issues, I must say this book is a gem! Laurie Kaye Abraham makes the most compelling arguments for health care reform in this book while walking the fine line of objectivity at the same time. Now I know I can truly say that I understand why many urban areas suffer from some of the same public health woes as third-world countries. Thank you, Ms. Abraham for inspiring me and thanks to the Banes family for allowing us into their lives.

A wake-up call for the U.S.

The U.S. government would like us to think that we, being the lone superpower in the world today, have all of our own internal problems solved. Not so. There are millions of uninsured and underinsured people (many of them children) in the U.S. who struggle to meet their own basic (and more advanced) health care needs. This is often a foreign world to Americans raised with good health insurance coverage. Yet Abraham shows us that we cannot ignore the health care problems in our own backyard.
As a recent college graduate who is entering medical school this fall, I was challenged to think carefully about how I will choose to practice medicine in the coming years. Given what I now know, I feel a responsibility to help change the plight of the uninsured.
As a final word, the only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is because the personal narratives, while very revealing, get a little long-winded at times. Otherwise, it is a great book, one that I anticipate referencing frequently in the coming years.

A Must Read for Those Interested in Health Care Issues

I found this book to be a great resource for a description of health care coverage for the lower income bracket individuals and families. It discussed many of the loops that people have to go through in this process and how simply getting to the doctor's office is out of reach without the right resources. This was an insightful albeit incredibly difficult book to read. Health care workers should read this and get a feel for how something that seems very easy to say is almost impossible to do...this is worth the time and money!

WWII fictional history at its best.....

Book 7 of Raiding Forces Desert Patrol does not fail to deliver on the story of Maj. Randal's war although three qtrs. of the book I spent figuring out who's who and who was doing what, bit of confusion. I was I little disappointed that the action was in the later part of the book. I'm still wondering what lies in store with in his next book Private Army, too bad we have to wait until December to find out what is going to happen with Captain The Lady Seaborn, John Randal and Raiding Forces Phil has done a lot of research on the situation of the war in North Africa which was completely accurate I've always been intrigued by that part of WWII if your not completely informed on this theater of operations you'll enjoy it either way but the way the author brings life into history, for me it was more enjoyable I had to buy the book instead of the Kindle version which I prefer.

The story was fun to read and informative. The series will appeal to a reader that has an interest in military history and tactics.

I bought this book, as I have all the others in the series, in digital (Kindle) format. It is poorly formatted and greatly in need of a good proofreader. Especially annoying and distracting are the running together of text where a transition to a new line should occur. This makes for choppy reading. Inconsistent use of quotes also makes for misunderstanding as to who is speaking. There are a multitude of characters in these stories so any help the reader gets in keeping them straight will be appreciated. Perhaps not every character from the past novels needs to appear in each subsequent book.

Bottom line–I will continue to buy and read these interesting and informative stories BUT the author needs to 1) Get a competent editor to cut the clutter and to proofread 2) Find someone who knows how to format and publish ebooks. 3) Realize that digital books are the moneymakers, not traditional paper books.

This book should be read after reading Radezky Marsch. It is sort of the sequel to the former. Both books are not for fast reading, otherwise appreciation of the wonderful descriptions of people and places is lost.

Not at the level of Radetzkymarsch

I read Die Kapuzinergruft after Radetzkymarch (which I would give 5 stars) and then it is something of a disappointment. Trotta doesn't become a real person and the storyline is erratic and often implausible. But Joseph Roth is a great author, so I had no problem finishing it in a few days.

Must have book if you are involved in IQ, OQ, PQ !!

Having been involved in validations & Quality Technology Systems like FMEA and SPC, for the past few years and having worked in the injection molding industry I wanted to thoroughly understand the validation process for the medical industry. I found Bob's book on this topic to be exactly what I was looking for. He has brought out the essence of validation clearly with his lucidly written text. We have been offering our FMEA software predominantly to the automotive industry. The detailed treatment given to FMEA in this book has highlighted the needs of the medical industry very clearly. It identifies well with what we have been offering the industry. The book also helped me understand what the FDA requirements are. These are usually not clearly understood by non-US companies. I highly recommend this book to those who would want to understand this subject.

Giorgio Agamben is professor of aesthetics at the University of Verona. He is the author of ten previous books, including the prequel to this one, Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life. A Cautionary Book for the War on Terrorism

The State has employed from time to time a political action by declaring an emergency and suspending the laws and/or Constitutions of the country. This state of emergency is what Agamben calls the “State of Exception.” Readers will be familiar with declaring a state of emergency more from the results of a natural disaster, such as a catastrophic forest fire, or, as readers from California are most familiar with now, a prolonged drought.

This is not the emergency Agamben means. He is mainly concerned with states of emergency precipitated from social or political events. For instance, Napoleon declaring a state of siege due to the Reign of Terror. More modernly, Agamben discusses the state of exception with regards to the current War on Terror.

Agamben examines the historical record and customs of the European countries with regard to these emergency measures. The state of exception has different names in different countries.

In Germany it was Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, employed by Hitler to gain absolute power.

In Switzerland it was a Constitutional provision giving the federal government power to take all measures to “guarantee security.”

In Italy it was a provision of emergency executive decrees.

In France it was the suspension of rights whenever there was a “state of siege.”

In England, it was the institution of martial law.

Here in the United States it is Article I of the United States Constitutional which provides for the suspension of habeas corpus in times of insurrection. This provision has morphed, recently, into the “War on Terrorism;” the suspension of all rights, not simply to habeas corpus, to persons providing “material support” to terrorists; and other features not mentioned by Agamben, such as the concept of the “unitary executive,” granting near dictatorial power to the Executive; the declaration of “permanent war” — a de facto state of exception — on terrorism; and the term “War on Terrorism” itself. The list could go on and on.

Agamben sees many dangers with these sovereign powers. One, his historical analysis demonstrates that once granted, these powers are rarely withdrawn voluntarily. Two, if they are withdrawn, the reason is usually due to factors other than the reason these emergency powers were invoked, such as in the complete breakdown of the governmental apparatus, whether through war, Nazi Germany being an extreme example, or otherwise. Three, these sovereign powers are detrimental, if not positively antithetical, to the concept of a functioning democracy. And, four, while the historical record demonstrates these emergency powers were infrequently invoked, more contemporaneously they are the rule rather than the exception, whether invoked by traditional democratic or totalitarian States.

While Agamben does not employ this terminology, the State of Exception is a cancer to democratic institutions. Again, this is certainly true of Germany, when, as Agamben reminds us, Hitler’s actions after he obtained power, while horrific, were all “legal,” and within the bounds of his legal emergency powers.

Agamben’s book, then, is a word of caution. It is Agamben’s way of warning that a state of exception, once invoked, is a slippery slope, having its own costs to democracy.

Extraordinary

Agamben's State of Exception is an extraordinary work in several ways. It is superbly written, which is critical to the task of conveying such a complex subject. Agamben weaves his topic of 'exception' through philosophical, legal and historical frameworks, and succeeds in demonstrating how the topic must be viewed from multiple angles. Yet it is not simply from different 'view points' that Agamben argues; he presents his thesis with an abundance of knowledge - indeed erudition. This work is clearly of contemporary relevance, and Agamben amply demonstrates this. Yet he instructs the reader on how deeply historical and increasingly diffuse the topic is, extending to the political theory of Roman and Greek thinkers, and tracing the continuity of thought to present thinkers, and to events that bring the topic right into the living rooms of us all.

Academic to extremes

This book is monstrously huge and covers every possible area of architectural firm operations to a significant extent. The problem is this is all very, very dry and academic information. You'll read about all the things you'll find in any other academic text on business - the academic way to do finance, the academic way to run projects, etc. This book takes no risks, violates no norms, and spells things out exactly as you would learn it from a professor or textbook.

Whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective. I don't think anyone should actually read this book - it is more of a "reference only" book to be used when you seriously have no idea how a specific aspect of professional practice works. Think of it as an informational insurance policy - if you're in a jam and you need to know how a professor would tell you how to do something, then this is the place to look. And if you mess up, you can say you were doing it by the book, and whip this brick of paper out of your briefcase.

In all, this is a good reference for a variety of topics, which could be useful when looking for guidance on any given path you find yourself on in the day-to-day administration of an architecture firm. It's certainly not bad information, but I'm not sure how often a trained professional would actually use it.

All the information you could ever need.

This book is stuffed so full of information it is like carrying around an entire set of encyclopedias, which is marvelous because it means that if you ever need any information on the business of architecture, you have it all here in one handy reference.

The book breaks down into 4 sections: The Profession, Firm Management, Project Delivery and Contracts/Agreements.

It's really hard to overstate how densely packed this book is. There are no wasteful illustrations or wandering introductions, just straight down to the business of architecture. Some of the information provided is very general in that it could work in almost any business and some of it is very specific to architecture. For instance, the section on compensation consideration includes both information on demographic factors like age, culture and gender, which applies in any business. But it also includes information on architecture-specific considerations.

Some of the information that I came across seemed a little academic. In other words, the book definitely provides the technically correct information, but it may not be exactly how things are or should be done in the real world. But that's ok, because this book is intended to give you the correct information and then you can decide where to go from there.

I really can't conceive of a way to improve this book, it honestly covers every aspect you could possibly come across in the business and while it definitely isn't a manual for life in the real world, it is essential for understanding the business.

I wish I had purchased this sooner as the information covered is clear, concise and very reflective of the information candidates are expected to know for the exams. It is a great resource for any architect considering starting their own practice or just wanting to a broader understanding of the industry.

Stunned and hurt, Page keeps a vigil at Allyson's bedside while also coping with needy seven-year-old Andy and an ambivalent husband who can't decide whether to stay or leave. Her only support comes from Chloe's father, Trygve Thorensen, who has been the primary caretaker for his kids since their mother divorced him. Other plot twists include a visit from Page's self-indulgent, neurotic mother and her sister, and a secret concerning the driver of the other car in the accident. While not drawn in much depth, the characters are believable; Trygve in particular is likable and nurturing. The ending is predictable but pleasant, bound to delight Steel's fans. Here, anyway, readers will recognize from their own lives the fretting weariness of hospital vigils, the exposed vulnerability of young children, and the aggressive self-justification of a husband trapped in a vortex of guilt and self-pity. Full of Raw Emotion

Accident is a powerful story of how precious life is, & how everything you know to be true can just turn on a dime. Fate brings the families of 2 girls together in the most painful way. As time goes by, everything Page knows to be true can't be counted on anymore. Faced with the possibility of losing everything, Page finds the true meaning of love, family, & support as she is kept from the brink of emotional break down by a man who knows only too well what she is facing.
Danielle Steele's ability to make the reader feel every raw emotion is absolutely amazing. At times, I was brought to tears as I read the story & could feel the pain, loss, & ultimately, the triumph of the characters in this book! Wonderful!!

This was a gripping, passionate and very exciting story. You will not want to put it down once you start reading it. Although it was sad in parts, it was an enjoyable & interesting book to read & showed the effect an accident can have on the lives of so many people.
