Giorgio Agamben is professor of aesthetics at the University of Verona. He is the author of ten previous books, including the prequel to this one, Homo Sacer: Sovereign Power and Bare Life. A Cautionary Book for the War on Terrorism

The State has employed from time to time a political action by declaring an emergency and suspending the laws and/or Constitutions of the country. This state of emergency is what Agamben calls the “State of Exception.” Readers will be familiar with declaring a state of emergency more from the results of a natural disaster, such as a catastrophic forest fire, or, as readers from California are most familiar with now, a prolonged drought.

This is not the emergency Agamben means. He is mainly concerned with states of emergency precipitated from social or political events. For instance, Napoleon declaring a state of siege due to the Reign of Terror. More modernly, Agamben discusses the state of exception with regards to the current War on Terror.

Agamben examines the historical record and customs of the European countries with regard to these emergency measures. The state of exception has different names in different countries.

In Germany it was Article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, employed by Hitler to gain absolute power.

In Switzerland it was a Constitutional provision giving the federal government power to take all measures to “guarantee security.”

In Italy it was a provision of emergency executive decrees.

In France it was the suspension of rights whenever there was a “state of siege.”

In England, it was the institution of martial law.

Here in the United States it is Article I of the United States Constitutional which provides for the suspension of habeas corpus in times of insurrection. This provision has morphed, recently, into the “War on Terrorism;” the suspension of all rights, not simply to habeas corpus, to persons providing “material support” to terrorists; and other features not mentioned by Agamben, such as the concept of the “unitary executive,” granting near dictatorial power to the Executive; the declaration of “permanent war” — a de facto state of exception — on terrorism; and the term “War on Terrorism” itself. The list could go on and on.

Agamben sees many dangers with these sovereign powers. One, his historical analysis demonstrates that once granted, these powers are rarely withdrawn voluntarily. Two, if they are withdrawn, the reason is usually due to factors other than the reason these emergency powers were invoked, such as in the complete breakdown of the governmental apparatus, whether through war, Nazi Germany being an extreme example, or otherwise. Three, these sovereign powers are detrimental, if not positively antithetical, to the concept of a functioning democracy. And, four, while the historical record demonstrates these emergency powers were infrequently invoked, more contemporaneously they are the rule rather than the exception, whether invoked by traditional democratic or totalitarian States.

While Agamben does not employ this terminology, the State of Exception is a cancer to democratic institutions. Again, this is certainly true of Germany, when, as Agamben reminds us, Hitler’s actions after he obtained power, while horrific, were all “legal,” and within the bounds of his legal emergency powers.

Agamben’s book, then, is a word of caution. It is Agamben’s way of warning that a state of exception, once invoked, is a slippery slope, having its own costs to democracy.

Extraordinary

Agamben's State of Exception is an extraordinary work in several ways. It is superbly written, which is critical to the task of conveying such a complex subject. Agamben weaves his topic of 'exception' through philosophical, legal and historical frameworks, and succeeds in demonstrating how the topic must be viewed from multiple angles. Yet it is not simply from different 'view points' that Agamben argues; he presents his thesis with an abundance of knowledge - indeed erudition. This work is clearly of contemporary relevance, and Agamben amply demonstrates this. Yet he instructs the reader on how deeply historical and increasingly diffuse the topic is, extending to the political theory of Roman and Greek thinkers, and tracing the continuity of thought to present thinkers, and to events that bring the topic right into the living rooms of us all.

Academic to extremes

This book is monstrously huge and covers every possible area of architectural firm operations to a significant extent. The problem is this is all very, very dry and academic information. You'll read about all the things you'll find in any other academic text on business - the academic way to do finance, the academic way to run projects, etc. This book takes no risks, violates no norms, and spells things out exactly as you would learn it from a professor or textbook.

Whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective. I don't think anyone should actually read this book - it is more of a "reference only" book to be used when you seriously have no idea how a specific aspect of professional practice works. Think of it as an informational insurance policy - if you're in a jam and you need to know how a professor would tell you how to do something, then this is the place to look. And if you mess up, you can say you were doing it by the book, and whip this brick of paper out of your briefcase.

In all, this is a good reference for a variety of topics, which could be useful when looking for guidance on any given path you find yourself on in the day-to-day administration of an architecture firm. It's certainly not bad information, but I'm not sure how often a trained professional would actually use it.

All the information you could ever need.

This book is stuffed so full of information it is like carrying around an entire set of encyclopedias, which is marvelous because it means that if you ever need any information on the business of architecture, you have it all here in one handy reference.

The book breaks down into 4 sections: The Profession, Firm Management, Project Delivery and Contracts/Agreements.

It's really hard to overstate how densely packed this book is. There are no wasteful illustrations or wandering introductions, just straight down to the business of architecture. Some of the information provided is very general in that it could work in almost any business and some of it is very specific to architecture. For instance, the section on compensation consideration includes both information on demographic factors like age, culture and gender, which applies in any business. But it also includes information on architecture-specific considerations.

Some of the information that I came across seemed a little academic. In other words, the book definitely provides the technically correct information, but it may not be exactly how things are or should be done in the real world. But that's ok, because this book is intended to give you the correct information and then you can decide where to go from there.

I really can't conceive of a way to improve this book, it honestly covers every aspect you could possibly come across in the business and while it definitely isn't a manual for life in the real world, it is essential for understanding the business.

Full of Raw Emotion

Accident is a powerful story of how precious life is, & how everything you know to be true can just turn on a dime. Fate brings the families of 2 girls together in the most painful way. As time goes by, everything Page knows to be true can't be counted on anymore. Faced with the possibility of losing everything, Page finds the true meaning of love, family, & support as she is kept from the brink of emotional break down by a man who knows only too well what she is facing.
Danielle Steele's ability to make the reader feel every raw emotion is absolutely amazing. At times, I was brought to tears as I read the story & could feel the pain, loss, & ultimately, the triumph of the characters in this book! Wonderful!!

This was a gripping, passionate and very exciting story. You will not want to put it down once you start reading it. Although it was sad in parts, it was an enjoyable & interesting book to read & showed the effect an accident can have on the lives of so many people.

Invaluable as both study companion and reference book

I purchased this book as study material for my IASSC Green Belt exam. The methods and techniques in this book are fairly standard and I found only minor differences between it and the outlined curriculum for IASSC.

The first few chapters are slow but I believe important. Strictly speaking, however, I think you might skip ahead to the "Define" chapter without too much harm.

I haven't quite finished this book yet, but it's much more interesting and easy to read than I expected! I hope that this will prepare me well for certification in the near future. I would definitely recommend the book for reading and reference.

Long John Teddy Bear.

The sports autobiography may be one of the few genres in which the publishing industry has realized strong growth as there is no shortage of new releases concerning the athletes that so many of us admire. Golfer John Daly is the latest to tempt readers with an autobiography. Just after it was issued, it received considerable media attention, mostly due to its admission that the author gambled away, in the course of his career, over 50 to 60 million dollars.

My Life in and Out of the Rough: The Truth Behind All that Bull**** You Think You Know About Me promises to be a wild and "shocking" ride, but, strangely enough, it isn't as John Daly is one of the few people on this earth whose personality and essence closely correspond with his physical appearance. Simply due to repeated observation, readers will not be surprised to learn that he is impulsive, undisciplined, gluttonous, financially reckless, extremely emotional, friendly, kind, prone to bad habits, and a complete "Razorback Redneck" (in his own words). Golf is the only thing in life that he's ever been really good at, and the links were the only place he felt comfortable during his troubled childhood. We can sum him up by saying that he is the epitome of a southern good old boy who happens to be plagued by, in the vernacular of our day, some serious issues.

His daily behaviors exemplify that he is not one to idly chat about personal philosophy. Daly follows his mantra and is what he is which means he has little interest in self-improvement. "The Lion," the nickname he most prefers, will smoke, drink beer, and eat at McDonalds until one of the habits kill him. Intentional exercise also is not something to which he can relate. All of this leads us to the one aspect about the "Big `Un" not readily detectable via observation which is his toxic level of masochism.

John Daly is a thoroughly self-destructive man. When he becomes upset, and this does not appear to be an infrequent occurrence, he responds by hurting himself as opposed to hurting others. He has trashed numerous hotel rooms, and even, after a fight with one of his wives, wrecked his own house. What these damages ended up costing him I cannot fathom.

It is in this interpersonal area where his masochism is irrefutable. We know that he is perfectly aware of the pathology behind his matrimonial unions as he named one of his chapters, "All My Exes Wear Rolexes," but his cognizance has not altered his behavior. He is ripped off time and again by women who discard him as soon as they have put in the court mandated days for pension and earning vestment.

All of these blunders should not amount to our being over-sympathetic towards the author as he is an adult who has made his own willful choices. He may be na�ve and ignorant but he is not stupid. These recurring disasters have been inflicted and enabled by his own mind. They are psychologically satisfying to him in a way to which the rest of us cannot easily relate. He rebelled whenever friends, family, sponsors, doctors, and society tried to change him which means that he will remain uneven and unfinished forever. The only consolation is that, when the final tallies are penciled onto the scorecard, the only person he's ever really hurt is himself.

A True Character

Though not particuarly well written, this autobiography is nonetheless engaging and entertaining. Many of Daly's personal faults are already well known, so there is not too much in this book anyone will find shocking. Despite what another reviewer wrote, I never felt that Daly was making excuses for his behavior, giving his side of the story and providing more context to the myriad of situations he has created and found himself in over the years. He is by and large unapologetic, which in a way is refreshing. He seems mostly at peace with who he is and his take me or leave me attitude is sad in some respects. His ongoing gambling problem, poor diet, poor romantic choices, binge drinking, etc have kept him from regaining his position as a great golf player. If you like Daly buy the book. He is a definite character and overall a likable one who seems to generally appreciate his fans and those less fortunate than himself.

This great book chronicles one of the most important problems confronting scores of the world's population today. Untreated alcoholism and it's many manifestations. As this interesting book reveals time and time again, alcohol is the culprit behind the insanity of a very gifted but very ill man named John Daly. What little time he spent without ingesting alcohol of any kind...not just Jack Daniels...his life got better. And each and every time Mr. Daly picked up...his life got worse (as demonstrated by his performance this year on the PGA Tour). An alkee in his cups can only perform at about 30 percent of his or her ability...until all becomes impossible. Mr Daly has achieved enormous success using 30 percent of his God-given ability. Read the book...and see how King Alcohol really works. Unfortunately, John is still in denial and his life will continue to get worse. I know...I'm his sponsor waiting for the call. Uncle Jasper
