Fair and balanced presentation

I will begin by noting that as a postmillennialist and a partial preterist I am not in agreement with everything Anthony Hoekema says in "The Bible and the Future." Nevertheless, I highly recommend this book because it is one of the most comprehensive books available on eschatology in general and is one of the best defenses of the amillennial position available on the market today. In the 35 years that have gone by since it was first published in 1979 (which is when I first read the book) few other works have been published that provide insight on as wide a range of subtopics in eschatology as does Hoekema's work. In an area where many works written from all perspectives caricature opposing viewpoints, "The Bible and the Future" is written in an irenic spirit and bends over backwards to fairly represent those perspectives with which Hoekema does not agree.
The book is much more than an interpretation of the millennium or specific prophecies in Scripture concerning the antichrist, the Beast of Revelation, the Man of Lawlessness, and the like. It is an excellent introduction to eschatology in general. For examples, it includes chapters on the meaning of history, the Kingdom of God, the Already-Not Yet tension, physical death, the nature of immortality, the intermediate state, the resurrection of the body, the final judgment, eternal punishment, and the new earth, as well as sections on the millennium and other issues that are the primary focus of many works that have been written over the years.
Because it is so clearly written, it will prove useful for anyone who is seeking an overview of the general topic of eschatology. Moreover, because Hoekema is fair in his representation of those positions with which he disagrees, what he says permits the reader to make his or her own decision regarding the positions he supports.

It's the best I have read on the subject! I highly recommend it to all those interested in what the Bible tells us about what is to come.
