He creates a brainwave machine, tries to receive signals from the TV antenna, and finally questions his father while he is sleeping. Because his father is having a recurring nightmare, he mutters "two snakes," and Julian, Gloria, and Huey set out to capture two snakes with predictably humorous results. Julian is a convincing character with a very real family, and children will identify with his desire to surprise his father, as well as delight in the anticipation of comic disaster when he delivers his gift. His relationships with his best friend, Gloria, and his gullible little brother, Huey, ring true. While Cameron's prose style sometimes seems to suffer from the easy-reader format, the short sentences and accessible metaphors make the first-person narration convincing. Hilarious !!

This book is very funny.When I came to chapter 4,I laughed and laughed until my tears came rolling down my face.Whoever heard of someone telling you the meaning of brainwave is invisible waves in the air.Ha! Ha! Ha! This story is about a child named Julian,his brother and his friend named Gloria.Julian's father's birthday is near and Julian tries to figure what his father wants very much for his birthday.When his father says "Two snakes.Big ones.",they really went to the park and tried to catch two snakes.Ha! Ha! Ha! I wouldn't tell you the whole story.read this book and find out.I bet you'll laugh and laugh.This is one of the funniest books I have ever read.

great father-son and gender relationship roles,nice humor,well constructed language

Few children's books portray such a positive relationship between father and sons;even fewer books for children include a positively portrayed Afro-American father without stereotypes. This book and the others in the Julian series highlights the father as a great role model; serious yet forgiving and humorful.
I had purchased Ann Cameron's Julian series 20 years ago for my now adult children and they loved them back then. Now I've started to buy them for my six year old grand daughter and she and her parents also enjoy them as much as we did.
Well constructed language, fun themes around the day to day relationships between parents and children ( especially father and son), between siblings and friends in a typical neighborhood, AND with hardly any materialistic references,these books teach positive human values and provide a base for learning to love reading and well constructed language.
The format is simple,no glossy pages or other distractions,just plain and FUN reading!The themes are timeless.

My son loves the Julian series of books. He looks forward each night to reading the next chapter. These books are very entertaining and cute.
