A great book, with real information

Even though I was a student at Marshall U. from 1967 to 1971, an advid supporter of M.U. sports, and even tried to play a little football there in 1967, I was really surprised to learn what exactly went on at Marshall in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The recent movie WE ARE MARSALL, did not touch on some of the real problems MU was having in its football program along with its other sports. This book explains why the faculty and others wanted to drop the MU football, not the the story-line as presented in the "Hollywood-version" "true story" movie. I was their in that time frame, and I did not remember some of the details as displayed in the movie, but when I read this book all those rumors I really heard in 1969, 1970, & 1971(that I had forgotten about over time), came back to me, and finally made sense.

This book is great and I wish it had come out before the movie. This books presented a better story-line, as it dealt with the truth, and if filmmakers were so inclined, this story would have probably made a better movie.

Great textbook full of important information

This book is a great supplement to an introductory or intermediate college/university PR course. It is an easy read with great excerpts, contexts, and miscellaneous aspects that aid your reading and understanding. A lot of real-world examples are available which are most helpful to someone that has little experience in the real field. Furthermore, the book hits on very good points in an organized and structured manner. I liked the book so much that I have to decided to read into it further after my course has ended and study more of it for tips, suggestions, and practice.

I bought this book for my online class every time i attempt to search a word it turns off I can only flip through the pages i can't highlight or make notes if I click anything other than the next page or previous page button it shuts off. I don't know if you've tried it but studying for a test without a damn book is really hard I want to know who i can call about this because I am very unhappy and upset with this purchase I didn't pay 71 dollars for this.

Mor takes us back to the real, true human culture and nature --- about how women originated human social life --- as opposed to how men have destroyed human existence over the last several thousand years.
Imagine how futile it is to try and re-orient human relationships and society wi†hin the context of male dominated 'cults' namely Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We all should read Mor's book and have the courage to stand up for all that she teaches us.

Another part in this series.
After her secret has come out to the parents of one of her students, she finds out she likes it to be their sub a lot.
In this story she is in for something new, being a pet.
She is not afraid at all, she does have questions, but can't asks them, but she likes it a lot what they do to her. For me what they do to her, could have been written in more detail especially what they did to her in the first round, the second round is described better.
But it stops at the moment when it will get real interesting for her.

Idea had promise but execution is disappointing

This book was a good idea: a concise introduction of techniques for hobbyists or other "occasional" or non-professional machinists.

The problem is that the sales pitch is more thorough than the text. You are led to believe that this book will give you insight into all of the basic techniques used in machining. But it really doesn't. There are a handful of operations that are addressed in minimally-sufficient detail (like face-milling an irregular piece of stock true) but for the most part, the techniques are barely addressed. For instance, the author devotes quite a few pages to describing and presenting photographs of edge and center finders. But there are no photographs showing one in use, and the text describing its use is limited to a couple of vague sentences. Basically, if you knew what an edge-finder was before buying the book, but didn't know how to use one effectively and with precision, you still don't know after reading the book.

About half of the book is dedicated to a rather tedious (but reasonably thorough) description of a wide variety of machines and accessories that a prospective buyer might want or need to consider. But it is very frustrating that the author uses very local (in this case UK-specific) terminology, which does not match the common language you will find on the Internet, or from online suppliers. This is especially frustrating as the author is apparently a long-time editor of magazines for hobby machinists, so he should know better. If this is to be considered acceptable, the book should be identified as specifically for UK audiences.

Examples:

- The author distinguishes between what he calls "slot drills" and "end mills", the former having two flutes and being capable of plunge-cutting, while the later has more than two flutes and cannot plunge. The rest of the world uses "end mill" to describe all of these cutters, and distinguishes between those that can and can not plunge by calling them "center-cutting" or not.

- Small, cheap 3-flute carbon or high-speed steel cutters are presented as "FC3 cutters", with no explanation of the name. This appears to be UK-specific language.

- The author refers to "inserted tooth cutters" where most of the world uses the term "indexable cutters".

- The author presents "side lock cutters", which most of the world knows as "end-mill holders".

Why does this matter? In this age, "casual" machinists will probably buy their tooling online. The terminology used in this book will not match what most of the world uses, so the reader will have to work out the translation on their own.

- The text recommends against trying to sharpen your own cutters, then presents several pages of photos showing examples of cutter grinders you can buy... but doesn't actually describe how to grind cutters.

- In the section on taps, the author points out that there are differences between taps sold as "hand taps" and "machine taps", but no discussion on planning tapped holes, or the distinction between taper (or through) taps, plug taps, or bottoming taps... and, most importantly, no actual description of the best way to tap holes. There is an illustration of how to make a tapping guide, but no description in the text of how to use one or why you might want to.

- Countersinks (and cutting chamfers) and dies are not mentioned in the text at all. Roughing cutters are described, but there is no discussion of when or why you might want to use them.

Essentially, the book falls prey to a classic fault in technical writing. The author wants to address an entry-level audience, and so focuses on a level of description that is not useful to non-beginners. But the author's language assumes familiarity with many concepts and terms that only the non-beginner would have.

To be fair, the book contains some practical advice and photos regarding work-holding, which is probably one of the most important concepts for a beginner to learn. Those pages, however, only make up around 10% of an already very short book.

I'm definitely in the target audience for this book. I'm not aware of a better book on the topic, but I was disappointed with this one.

Excellent introductory work covering the whole of "Hunnic" history

Kim's The Huns is, overall, an excellent introduction to the history of the Huns as a group of related political entities throughout their long existence. It's important to understand that Kim (rightly) approaches the Huns not as an ethnic or (worse yet) racial group, but rather as a political group, which splintered into successor groups, which in turn produced their own Hunnic successor groups. As a result, the book covers the history of several related, though distinct, groups including the Xiongnu (ie, East Asian Huns), the Kidarites, Hepthalites, etc (ie, the Central Asian Huns), and the European Huns fmously ruled by Attila. Kim provides only a brief overview of some of the justifications in associating these various groups (there's a centuries-old debate about whether the European Huns originally came from the East Asian Xiongnu), but he does point the reader toward more detailed scholarship on the subject.

Kim is, at times, rather over-eager in his attempts to rehabilitate our image of the Huns, however. Problematically, much of his more far-fetched arguments are tied up in other, far more likely claims. I would advise taking some of Kim's grander claims with a grain or two of salt.

The book does include maps, but they are few, and difficult on the eyes. I'd recommend finding a bunch of maps online to accompany your read.

Lastly, the typeface. Oh, the typeface. Usually when books have weird fonts, there's some sort of page titled 'About the Typeface' which gives some sort of justification for it's use. Here, nothing. It's like someone accidentally switched fonts before hitting 'Print' at the publishing house, and no-one noticed until it was too late. After you get a few pages in, you start to get used to it, but....

In summary, the book is excellent, but imperfect. Kim may get a touch over-excited about the wonderfulness of the Huns at times, but if nothing else, this gives a counterbalance to the all-too-common view of the Huns as nothing but savage raiders. The content is marred by some distracting font and poor maps, but these are not severe enough to ruin the book by any means. Highly recommended as an introduction for anyone looking to learn more about the Huns, and his bibliography will lead interested readers on to more substantial works by various scholars.

Top-Notch Guide to Understanding the D5500

This is not an owners manual, but a great instructional manual on how to actually use the myriad features of the D5500 to take photos. Well thought out and presented in a manner that most amateur shutterbugs can understand. Wish I'd have had something like this when I started out in photography 45 years ago!

He just changes the name of the camera in title and the text is 95% identical. Easy money. All the Kindle editions of the amateur cameras have 288 pages, the more complicated cameras 312. See any pattern in here? Research the Internet about dslr photography and leaf through the manual if you need it. It's free!

Very disappointed in this book

Very disappointed in this book. I already had purchased the same volume for the 3200 (Nikon D3200: From Snapshots to Great Shots). When I upgraded my camera to the D5500 recently, I placed a pre-order for the new upcoming book for the 5500. It arrived yesterday and it is almost entirely a word for word copy of the 3200 version with only a few minor changes here and there. I expected at least some new information relevant to this camera over the other, even if the cameras are similar. I would never have purchased this edition had I ever dreamed that it would be a virtual copy of the first, substituting the number 5500 for 3200 everywhere it appeared and little else other than a new picture on the cover. What a waste of money! The book itself is good, but who would have thought that they would repackage the original as a new book with a slightly different title. Shame, shame, shame!

The Best at Translating Conceptual Shifts

Brett Moulding, Dr. Rodger Bybee, and Nicole Paulson have made a significant contribution to the literature on the necessary shifts required to achieve the new vision for science education. The first several chapters of their book provide an overview of the trajectory of research that lead to the publication of A Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards. Their book emphasizes an important goal of science education is to create a classroom environment where students make sense of novel phenomena that engage them in science performances at the intersection of three dimensional learning. The authors assert that a highly effective way to think about how three dimensional learning is implemented in a classroom is with a performance sequence of: gathering, reasoning, and communicating. Reflection questions at the end of each chapter and the appendices make this book a valuable resource for individual study or work among a PLC. This book is the best I have read at translating the conceptual shifts of the Framework and NGSS into a logical, straightforward manner so as a professional teacher you can implement these powerful ideas successfully in your classroom.
